Chateauneuf-du-Pape AOC, Domaine Feraud et Fils, Rouge Tradition, 2019
The wonderful story of this appellation goes beyond the fact of being the summer residence of the Pope in the fourteenth century - It is also historic the fact that here, in 1923, Baron du Roy of Château Fortia drew up a set of rules that became the prototype for the first AOC in France.
A challenge and at the same time a paradise for winemakers, Chateauneuf-du-Pape AOC allows 18 different grape varieties to be used in their blends. An endeavor that in the right hands - like the ones of Eddie Feraud - produces unforgettable wines.
For his Rouge Tradition, 2018 Eddie have chosen 80% of Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre and 5% of Clairette Rose and Cinsault combined – all of them grown on his beautiful small vineyard.
His hand-picked grapes are fermented with natural yeast and the wine is aged in centenary old casks, a legacy from his family - the result is a Chateauneuf-du-Pape with a lovely finesse and elegance. Expect remarkable notes of red plums and blackberry fruits combined with subtle spice notes, good acidity and the right amount of tannins.
This is the wine to pair with food of intense and complex flavors – including spicier meals, rich tomato-based pasta as well as Chilli con Carne and beef bourguignon.
